Thread: Microphone Positioning

    Microphone Positioning

im just wondering whats the best way to position your microphone for vocals,
i have the rode nt1a, quiklok A-300 mic stand and the Stedman PS101 Pop Filter. Should it be placed upside down in the shockmount, right side up in the shockmount, should the microphone be turned sideways and not directly front on for your vocals?
im wanting to know your thoughts on that thanks!
    A picture would be awesome!

You want to be speaking directly into the diaphram. Pop filter fairly close, maybe half inch away, you want your mouth to be probably 3 inches away from the mic.

Something to take into concideration is the proximity effect, which says that the closer you get to the mic, the more enhanced the low freq. will be, and the farther away, the more enhanced the hi's will be. Close = deep Farther Away = Thin

the stedman should be under 2 inches from the mic. your mouth should be about 6-12 inches away from the mic. the mic diaphram should be slightly above your mouth. you can also tilt the mic slightly away from your mouth if you still experience plosives or excess sibilance.

You should experiment with the distance between your mouth and the mic. the closer you get the more presence you'll have. it's all about finding a sound that you're happy with.

i have the little mic "shiny thingy" aka diaphram facing me and the pop filter about two finger lengths away from the mic

i stay a good 10 maybe 12 inches away when im in the process of "laying it down" with my "ill flows"

if i get to close the situation tends to get opey with it so iv learned to keep my distance and i get a pretty clear response

that plus take into acount i got a pretty raspy/deep/ aggerssive voice

id post pictures up but im just too lazy right now

oh and i use a rode nt1a btw

My pop filter is like 3 or 4 inches away. And I'm like 3 inches from that. I'm happy with what sound I make, and I have an AKG mic.

the stedman is different than other pop filters. keep that in mind. it's easy to see where the stedman needs to be. if you put your hand behind the stedman and blow into it you can feel the air being diverted away from the center. just make sure the pop filter is far enough away so no air blows into the mic.
